This is why the X-Men weren't in Avengers: Endgame

Could some of the X-Men have been in Avengers: Endgame? The answer is complicated

Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame ahead

Avengers: Endgame has been released to a grateful universe, and audiences have reciprocated accordingly. With the dust now settled following the epic clash between the Avengers and Thanos, we're starting to gain more insight into Marvel's latest smash hit.

In an interview with the New York Times, Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely address a number of burning topics, from plot points to character arcs to time travel.

Perhaps the juiciest question is about X-Men, which is now under Marvel's umbrella following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets.

According to McFeely, they weren't legally allowed to include any X-Men character in the movie, because at the time Avengers: Endgame was being made, the acquisition wasn't finished. Plus, there's the matter of Dark Phoenix coming out in June.

"You can't reboot [X-Men] before they're done," Markus said.

New York Times also asked the screenwriters about what characters almost made it into Avengers: Endgame. Turns out, the Living Tribunal actually was considered, so there was merit to a popular theory floating around last year.

"We did try to put the Living Tribunal in the first movie," Markus said. We wrote a scene in which he appeared during the Titan fight. And everyone was like, what?"

Markus and McFeely provide much more insight into Avengers: Endgame, like why Black Widow had to die, Cap's happy ending, and Falcon's future as the new Captain America.

If you have a burning question about Avengers: Endgame, chances are the answer you're looking for is in NYT's extensive Q&A.
