Burger King’s meatless Impossible Whopper to roll out nationally

The larger rollout comes on the heels of a success trial run.

After a successful trial run, Burger King has announced plans to offer the Impossible Whopper at more locations across the US. As CNN points out, Burger King had about 7,300 stores in the US at the end of 2018.

The news comes on the heels of test that started on April 1, in which Burger King offered the meatless Impossible Whopper at a store in St. Louis. According to a Burger King spokesperson, the test "went exceedingly well."

The burger, which features a meatless patty from Impossible Foods, will be offered in more markets in the near future before rolling out nationally by the end of 2019.

The timing of Burger King's larger rollout is no mere coincidence. Interest in meatless alternatives is steadily rising, while competing fast food chain Del Taco rolled out Beyond Meat tacos earlier this month.

According to CNN, the global market for meat substitutes is set to grow from around $4.6 billion in 2018 to $6.4 billion in 2023, and Burger King clearly wants to jump on the trend early.
