Dolly Parton says the best way to succeed at your 9-to-5 is to find your dream and stick to it.
Most fans know about her popular hits, philanthropy, and acting career, but the country legend is also the co-owner of two companies.
Parton cofounded Sandollar Productions, which coproduced the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series and movie, with her former manager Sandy Gallin in 1986, per Entertainment Weekly.
That same year, Parton partnered with Herschend Enterprises to form the Dollywood Company and transform a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, into Dollywood, according to its website. Parton still co-owns the theme park, which now includes a dinner theater and waterpark.
Speaking to Business Insider about her advice for Gen Z workers, Parton recalls a quote she once shared on X.
"Find out who you are and do it on purpose," she says. "That means if you really want to know who you are, you really got to put some thought, prayer, and effort in trying to figure out what that is.
"But dreams can come true. I'm a prime example of that — just a country girl from the mountains," Parton continues.
Parton says that not everyone is "destined to great success," but encourages Gen Z workers to work hard and take advantage of their talent and opportunities.
"When you do get an opportunity to see your dreams come true, then you build what they call a brand, and then you're someone that people come to trust," she says. "And if those dreams come true, then you make deals with people. "
Parton is no stranger to the importance of branding. Since 2022, Parton has been working with Duncan Hines and its parent company, Conagra, to release Dolly-branded cake mixes.
This week, the "Jolene" singer announced that five new mixes with Duncan Hines are set to hit stores this month, with a buttermilk pancake mix following later this year.
"People say, 'Why are you selling cakes and pies?' And I think, 'Because I can and it's good,'" she tells BI. "That's also part of my heritage. Even though I love the music, I love to cook."
Parton also tells BI that workers shouldn't fear changing career paths.
"If you see that you're heading down a path doing one thing and it's not working out, I've always said it is OK to change horses in the middle of a dream," she says.
"Maybe you've learned just enough about the thing you were after that God's directing you in a different way. So the main thing is just to work hard, believe in yourself — and do it," Parton adds.
