Amazon is facing a fresh union battle in a New York state warehouse
- An Amazon warehouse in Albany, New York has filed a petition for a union election.
- The NLRB will verify whether the petition has obtained enough employee signatures to hold an election.
- Amazon has fiercely opposed unionization in the past.
Workers at an Amazon warehouse outside Albany, New York have officially told the National Labor Relations Board they want to hold a union election, an NLRB spokesperson confirmed to Insider.
The NLRB spokesperson said it had received a petition for a unit of approximately 400 workers at the warehouse and will now verify if they've obtained enough employee signatures to hold an election.
Amazon saw the formation of its first-ever US warehouse worker union in April this year when a warehouse in Staten Island voted to form an independent grassroots union called the Amazon Labor Union.
The NLRB spokesperson told Insider the ALU filed the petition for the Albany warehouse.
Amazon has fiercely opposed unionization, and the NLRB accused the company of illegal union-busting in the case of the Staten Island warehouse.
The NLRB also forced Amazon to allow a re-run of a union election at a warehouse in Alabama after the agency ruled the company had illegally interfered with the first election.
Former Amazon worker and leader of the ALU Chris Smalls tweeted a picture of himself visiting the Albany warehouse on Tuesday.

The Albany union petition also comes shortly after worker protests in California and the UK.
Workers at an Amazon air freight hub in San Bernardino walked off the job on Monday in protest over pay and improved working conditions.
"Unionizing is not off the table for us," one San Bernardino worker told The Washington Post.
Amazon workers at several UK warehouses held protests earlier this month after they were offered pay rises of £0.35 ($0.42)
