A Frontier Airlines flight from Cincinnati to Tampa made an emergency landing in Atlanta on Friday night after a passenger on the plane was spotted with a box cutter.
The man threatened to stab fellow passengers and crew members on flight 1761, Tim Turner, a spokesperson for Atlanta International Airport told The New York Times.
Nobody was injured, the airline said. The passenger, who hasn't been identified, was taken into custody by Atlanta Police.
It's unclear how he managed to get the box cutter onto the plane. Box cutters have been banned since a post-9/11 tightening of aircraft security regulations, after they were among the weapons wielded by Al Qaeda hijackers on September 11, 2001.
Knives and blades, including box cutters, should be identified in pre-flight screening.
All passengers were offered hotel accommodation in Atlanta, and a new flight has been scheduled for Saturday to take them to Tampa, Frontier Airlines spokesperson Jennifer de la Cruz told The Times.
Frontier, Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport, Atlanta Police and the Transportation Security Administration did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider.
