New US low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines is expanding its East Coast network beyond Florida with all-new routes between Connecticut and the Southeast.

On Wednesday, Avelo announced four new routes between its New Haven base and cities in Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, with fares for all four starting at $49 one-way. The expansion brings the airline's East Coast network to 10 routes.

"Our Customers are telling us they would love for Avelo to fly to more places beyond Florida," Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said in a press release. "These four new routes show we're listening. Now with 10 popular Southeastern U.S. destinations to choose from, Avelo is Connecticut's most convenient, reliable and affordable choice for your next vacation, weekend getaway, or reconnecting with family and friends."

Avelo's expansion makes it the only carrier serving Savannah, Georgia, nonstop from the state, as well as the only airline serving Nashville, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston from southern Connecticut, according to the airline. Currently, Avelo exclusively flies from New Haven to six cities in Florida using Boeing 737-700 jets.

Tweed-New Haven Airport is a small market that lost its air service in September 2021 after American Airlines left due to the pilot shortage, the Hartford Courant reported.

However, newcomer Avelo saw an advantage in entering the market, seeing demand from communities near New Haven that would rather fly nonstop from southern Connecticut than travel to a New York City airport, Boston, or Hartford in northern Connecticut. The carrier launched its inaugural flight between New Haven and Orlando on November 3.

Avelo explained that New Haven offers a "refreshingly smooth and simple alternative hometown airport experience" that avoids the "crowds, long lines, lengthy walks, and traffic congestion encountered at other airports frequented by Connecticut travelers."

Moreover, the airport's close proximity to major highways and public transportation makes it a convenient and easily accessible option for travelers, Avelo explained.

According to the airline, it flew about 70,000 passengers on nearly 600 flights in its first 100 days at New Haven, proving demand for flights out of the airport exists, and that the operation would have a positive economic impact on the local community.

While Avelo is off to a good start out of New Haven, rival Breeze Airways is not slowing down in the Northeast either. In December, the airline announced eight new routes from Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, New York, and currently offers four routes out of Hartford, Connecticut, including Charleston, Norfolk, Pittsburgh, and Columbus, Ohio.
